Victorian - a bygone era, yet one that lives on in our architecture and our furnishings; many of the permanent parts of our lives. Victorian brings to mind a subdued elegance and a solid, timeless beauty; a style, never a fad. Halcyon has gone direct to the mill and dye house to bring you original, custom-made yarns designed to be invaluable to hand weavers and knitters. All three Victorian yarns, 2-ply, Boucle and Brushed Mohair share the same subtly muted tones, for classic elegance and lots of versatility. Our Victorian 2-ply is a soft and simple yarn designed for beauty and useability, as well as economy. The softness is derived from a slightly softer spin in each ply with a slightly softer twisting of the plies than in many woolen-spun 2-ply yarns. And Victorian 2-ply will soften and loft up even more when washed or fulled. These characteristics mean warm, light-weight garments. As for economy, Victorian 2-plys lofty nature means fewer warps and wefts per inch than most yarns of similar yardage. Add to that its price and extensive discount schedule, Victorian 2-ply can't help but be a yarn you'll want to use again and again!
Weavers: You can use Victorian 2-ply as warp and weft for shawls, scarves, blankets, and outerwear pieces, or as an alternate warp or ground weft with Victorian Boucle or Victorian Brushed Mohair. Weaving tip: If you're having trouble maintaining your selvedges in balanced weaves, especially with a soft warp and light tension, try using a strand of Pearl Cotton as a floating selvedge. These threads can be tensioned more tightly than the rest of the warp to maintain width by adding a hanging weight, then pulled out before washing.
Knitters: Victorian 2-ply is a versatile sport weight yarn for hand and machine knitting. Low pilling adds a long life to its favorable characteristics. It is especially nice in multi-color work. Double-strand any two Victorian styles together on #101/2 needles at 3 sts/inch for a lovely "designer" bulky yarn.
General Note: For a touch of dazzle in your next project, add an occasional strand of Astra Glow metallic (item 151)
