  • Fine: 2, 3, or 4 Cut (crewel work)
  • Medium: 3 or 4 Cut
  • Coarse: 4, 5 or 6 Cut
  • Primitive: 5, 6, 7, or 8 Cut

In traditional wool-strip rug hooking, the “cut” refers to the width of the wool strip being pulled through the backing cloth. The hook itself should generally match both the strip width and the backing cloth gauge (linen, monks cloth, primitive linen, burlap, etc.). Yarn can also be substituted successfully, just keep in mind that the yarn weight needs to visually fill the same space as the wool strip.
