Description

Join us in welcoming Maine fiber artist Susan Hess for a special in-person artist talk and exhibit exploring her intricate body of work, Miniature Echoes Through the Art of the Gee’s Bend Quiltmakers. Inspired by the iconic quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama—an extraordinary tradition of African American quiltmaking—and the 2006 American Treasures U.S. Postal Service stamp series, Susan has recreated all ten quilts in miniature using detailed weaving and embroidery techniques.

Drawing on the stories of the Gee’s Bend quiltmakers and the collective experiences of recent years, this work invites reflection on personal, cultural, and societal narratives.

Susan will share the story behind the project, her creative process, and insights from her accompanying autobiographical book, which will be available to explore alongside the exhibit. The exhibit will be on display in the shop for two weeks, offering a rare opportunity to experience these pieces up close.

Free to attend, light fare provided. All are welcome!

Talk: Thursday, July 2 • 5:30–6:30 pm

Exhibit: Thursday June 25 - Saturday July 11

Halcyon Yarn, 12 School St., Bath, Maine
