Fun with Variegated Yarns: Tips & Tricks for Beautiful Results with Linda Perry

Wednesday, July 22, 2026 | 3:30–5:30 PM*
Maine Maritime Museum Lighthouse & Nature Cruise

Join Halcyon Yarn and instructor Linda Perry aboard the Merrymeeting, the Maine Maritime Museum's 50-passenger cruise vessel, for a unique afternoon of knitting, learning, and coastal exploration on the Kennebec River. (See ship details below!)

During this special event, we'll join one of the Museum's regularly scheduled Lighthouse & Nature Cruises, exploring the lower Kennebec while learning about historic lighthouses, maritime history, and the wildlife that calls this region home. Along the way, Linda will help you unlock the secrets of one of knitting's most colorful challenges: variegated yarns.

Your registration includes both the workshop and the cruise experience.

Make a Day of It!

Your ticket includes free admission to Maine Maritime Museum for the day, so we encourage you to arrive early and explore the Museum's exhibits, historic campus, and waterfront before boarding. Make a full day of your visit before joining us for an unforgettable afternoon on the Kennebec.

Workshop Description: Fun with Variegated Yarn!

Settle in for a relaxing cruise on the Kennebec while exploring one of knitting's most colorful challenges: variegated yarns. In this hands-on session, Linda Perry will share simple strategies for working with multi-colored yarns in your knitting. Make the most of colorful hand-dyed skeins in any projects!

Together, we'll explore:

  • The characteristics of variegated yarns and how they affect knitted fabric
  • Simple ways to reduce or avoid pooling
  • Stitch patterns that break up or soften blotches of color
  • Easy techniques for highlighting color shifts and adding surface interest
  • Working intentionally with hand-dyed yarns and assigned pooling

This is a relaxed, exploratory workshop focused on curiosity and play. You'll swatch, experiment, and see how different approaches change the fabric in real time.

Whether you're drawn to bold hand-dyes or occasionally surprised by what your yarn decides to do, this session is about learning how to work with color as it unfolds—and discovering new possibilities in every skein.

Skill Level: Beginner and beyond! This is not a learn to knit class, you should be comfortable with the basics of casting on/off, knitting and purling.

Your Ticket Includes:

  • A relaxing 2-hour cruise
  • A Halcyon Yarn project bag with a few surprise goodies
  • Pre-wound variegated yarn for use in the workshop
  • 10% off purchases at Halcyon Yarn, good for the week of the Cruise
  • Free admission to the Maine Maritime Museum on the day of your cruise

Materials to Bring: US size 6 or 7 straight knitting needles
