Leclerc Wooden Warp Sticks (set of 12)
Leclerc Wooden Warp Sticks (set of 12)
Description
Description
Warp sticks (aka packing sticks / separators) are one of those small details that make a huge difference in smooth, even tension on a floor loom. Leclerc's durable and smooth wooden warp sticks will separate and stabilize even the heaviest warp on the beam. Place them evenly between layers of warp as you wind on under tension.
Wooden sticks are thicker than other separators, so that will take up more of the available space between the warp beam and the back beam, limiting you to a shorter warp than if you use thinner separator, and depending on the thickness of your warp yarn and how tightly you wind it on.

How many warp sticks per rotation?
2 sticks per full rotation of the warp beam is a standard, reliable setup.
This creates a stable “sandwich” of warp layers so they don’t sink into each other and cause tension issues.
At what interval?
As you wind on:
-
Turn the beam about half a turn
-
Place one stick
-
Turn another half turn
-
Place the second stick
-
Repeat for the next full rotation
This spaces the layers evenly and keeps your warp nice and flat instead of forming ridges or valleys.
Why 2 sticks works best
-
Prevents threads from cutting into lower layers
-
Keeps tension even across the width
-
Stops soft yarns from sinking into each other
-
Makes beam buildup nice and cylindrical instead of lumpy
One stick per rotation can work in a pinch, but you’ll often get slight ridging and less even separation. More than two usually doesn’t buy you much unless you’re dealing with super slippery yarns or very thick/highly tensioned warps.
More tips
-
Width: The spacing materials should always be slightly wider than your warp, but narrow enough to not catch on the loom frame or brake as the beam rotates.
-
Material: Cardboard sticks also work well, especially for finer warps that are not under heavy tension, however wood lasts longer and won’t compress, making it best for your most heavy-duty warp yarns and pieces woven under very tight tension.
-
Alternative: single sided corrugated cardboard is also a great option that does not require 'spacing,' you just wind it on continuously for very even and easy coverage between layers. Or, you can cut it into one foot sections and use it more like individual sticks. The key is to make sure it winds on square to the loom, so it doesn't start to move off the edge and interrupt coverage or interfere with the brake or other pieces of the beam's edge.
-
Or: heavy paper or kraft paper can replace sticks for finer warps.
