Description

The David III is an 8-shaft floor loom with a sinking shed. The footprint is small, but its.  functionality surpasses many a large loom. Named after the biblical story of David and Goliath, the David loom is small but mighty.

Available in 70, 90, or 110 cm weaving width. The warp beam can be folded in, after which the depth of the folded loom is 34”. With terrific ergonomics, a quiet and durable Texsolv system, and the classic attention to detail for which Louet is known, this loom will provide a terrific weaving experience for years to come.

The tie-up of a single treadle system with pre-applied cords requires little effort, and also operating the treadles is very light. Thanks to an ingenious spring system, the shed is about 5 cm high, and the warp thread tension is the same on the upper and lower parts.

David is made of lacquered beech wood. It is delivered partially assembled; the castle is already assembled, and the frame will need to be put together. See videos below for in-depth assembly and operating details!

Included are a built-in raddle with raddle covers, stainless steel reed 40-10 (10 dpi), 800 Texsolv heddles (280 mm, 100 per harness), 2 lease sticks, 2 apron sticks, and 16 warp sticks.

Dimensions (wxdxh) and weight

  • D70:    40 7/8 x 34 ¼ 1/4” x 47”, 88 lb

  • D90:    48 1/2” x 34 ¼ 1/4” x 47”, 98 lb

  • D110:    52” x 34 ¼ 1/4” x 47” 108 lb

The David was redesigned in 2021, and the current version, David III, has a sturdier frame and beams, a standing beater, and an improved brake system. In 2023 the following additional improvements were made:

  • Locking nuts on the lam cords - locking nuts are used so that we can better set the correct nut position in the factory and that nut position will not change during shipping. Once installed the locking nut has little function.  Therefore older David 3 looms do not suddenly need this locking nut.
  • Higher tension on the springs in the castle - to prevent 2 shafts from being pulled down together.
  • Jig for the beater height adjustment - also only needed in a new setup
  • New assembly manual and video, including user instructions and part lists

Sinking Shed:

The David Loom is a sinking shed loom but it is not a counterbalance loom. Counterbalance looms work with 2 sets of rollers. When you tie-up a treadle to any combination of shafts then you have an opposite movement of what has not been tied-up. The David has shafts that are attached to cams and springs inside the castle.

All the harnesses always rest in the up position of the shed and then when your treadle moves down through the midpoint to the bottom of the reed giving you a sinking shed action (which means only one part of the warp moves) but you have a counterbalance shed which gives you equal tension on both parts of the warp. Louet is the only loom manufacturer to use this system… they invented it. You have no sag in your warp ever and you get no rolling of the weft inside the shed which are both problems with
traditional jack looms.
