Intro to Rug Hooking Class with Lise Mendham (September 19, 2026)

Discover the satisfying art of rug hooking with yarn while creating your own charming owl mat in this welcoming beginner workshop!

This is a single day workshop, Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

Class size is limited, please sign up early to reserve your spot.

In this hands-on introduction to rug hooking, instructor Lise Mendham will guide you through the traditional technique of pulling loops of yarn through a backing cloth using a rug hook to create texture, color, and pattern.

Perfect for beginners, this class offers a relaxed and supportive environment where you’ll learn the foundations of this historic fiber craft while working on your owl design. Your project can be completed during class or finished at home after the workshop.

Throughout the session, students will learn:

• The basics of traditional rug hooking
• How to use a rug hook and hoop/frame
• Techniques for pulling consistent loops
• How to follow a hooked design pattern
• Tips for working with color and texture
• Finishing techniques and how to continue your project at home

There will be plenty of time for questions and individual guidance throughout the class, and handouts will be provided.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have completed a substantial portion of your owl mat, developed a strong foundation in rug hooking techniques, and gained the confidence to continue exploring this creative and deeply satisfying craft.

Skill Level: Beginner – no prior experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome!

Materials:

• Hoop, backing cloth, and yarn are included with registration and are yours to keep. (Morgan 14" hoop included with your class registration!)
• Students should bring sharp craft scissors (flat tip, not curved) and a rug hook. If needed, these tools may be purchased in advance through our website.

About the Artist: Lise Mendham

Lise Mendham has been drawn to fiber textiles since childhood. She grew up in a family that supported artistic interests, and when she was young she loved to weave and sew. About thirty years ago, Lise found her true textile passion when she discovered the wonders of rug hooking—as a craft, an art form, and a community.

After retiring from a long career as an oncology nurse, Lise had the opportunity to learn how to teach rug hooking from the talented teacher and artist Deanne Fitzpatrick of Amherst, Nova Scotia (Deanne Fitzpatrick Studio). Deanne often says, “Create Beauty Every Day,” a philosophy that continues to inspire Lise’s work.

It brings Lise great joy to share rug hooking with others and to welcome students into this creative practice.

All classes are taught in-person at Halcyon Yarn, 12 School St., Bath, Maine, unless otherwise noted.
